Sioux Center News of May 14,2003
Ted Hengeveld
Theodore G. "Ted" Hengeveld, 85, of Sioux Center died Saturday, May 10, at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility. A memorial service was Tuesday at 10:30 a.m, at First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with the Rev. John Witvliet officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Hengeveld was born to John and Alyda, Westerveld Hengeveld on July 8, 1917 in Aalten, The Netherlands. His family immigrated to the
United States when he was five years old, settling at Sanborn. On August 27, 1943 he married Nellie De Jong at her parents home in
Orange City. The couple settled in Carnes, where they had purchased a service station on Highway 60.

The station became known as Ted's Standard Service Station. Because it was the only business for miles, its inventory was likened to today's convenience store. He enjoyed running
the business, which he owned for 45 years, and made it a family affair employing each of his children throughout their teen years.

The station was also known as the community gathering place for the Carnes area, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. After the
couple sold the business, they lived in their home in Carnes for a few years before moving to Sioux Center in 1986 where their children lived.
He was a hardworking person and a dedicated family man. He was extremely fond of their cabin on Silver Lake near Lake Park. He loved
having his children and their families stay at the cabin where boating was often a high priority. In his spare time at home he did some
gunsmithing and gun collecting. While living at Carnes, he was a member of First Christian
Reformed Church of Orange City and became a member of First Christian Reformed of Sioux Center after moving.

Surviving is his wife of 59 years; two daughters and sons-in-law: Garneth and Ron Lighthiser and
Helene and Marv Rietema, and son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Rachel Hengeveld, all of Sioux Center; nine grandchildren; a brother, Bill Hengeveld of Sheldon; sister, Minnie De Hoogh of Sheldon; and sister-in-law,Marge Hengeveld of
Hartley, Tena De Jong and R'etta De Jong of Orange City;
brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Pete and Jeanette Bylsma of Orange City and Henry
and Irene Smeenk of Grandville, Michgan; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by infant son Theodore; two sisters: Dora Postma and Lyda Victoria;
and three brothers, Henry, John and Joe Hengeveld. The Hengeveld Family requests
memorials be made to area Christian schools
