SHELDON—Bertha Joan Schat, 77, Sheldon, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007 at Sanford Senior Care Sheldon. Services were Tuesday, Aug. 28, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. David Brower officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, under the direction of Andringa Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Bertha Schat, daughter of Ralph and Kate (Van Donge) Lammers, was born Oct. 17, 1929, in Sioux Center. She lived her youth on a farm west of of Sioux Center and attended Sioux Center Public Schools, where she graduated from high school. She married Ralph Schat of Sheldon on May 21, 1948 in Sioux Center. They lived in Sheldon, where he worked as a finish carpenter and she worked at Coxie's Restaurant and as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell until it closed and she retired. Mr. Schat died Oct. 18, 1996. She was a member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon. She enjoyed music, reading novels and gardening, especially flowers. For many years she was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader and Sunday School teacher. Children's stories she wrote were published in the Sunday School Guide. She was a member of the church choir and a frequent soloist for weddings, funerals and other occasions. She loved to share a good joke with her family.
Survivors include five children, Robert and Laura Schat of Sheldon, Carol and Craig Ellerbrock of Gladstone, IL, Kathryn and Joseph Warta of Omaha, NE, Debra and Ray Abma of Houston, and Paul Schat of Sheldon; 13 grandchildren; a great- grandchild; and four sisters, Dorothy of Sioux Center, Ruth Van Ravenswaay of Sioux Center, Evelyn and Fred Lamfers of Sioux Center, and Lila and Allen Van Dyk of Sibley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Schat; a brother, Ralph Lammers Jr.; and a sister, Frieda Vande Brake.
