Peter Vanden Berge
Mr. Peter Vanden Berge, 86, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City. A memorial service was held on Saturday morning, Sept. 1, 2007 at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. Interment was held prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Peter was born on July 25, 1921, in rural Orange City,
the son of Peter and Jennie (Rietveld) Vanden Berge. He was raised at Carnes, where he attended country school, and he served in the United States. Navy during World War II. On June 23,1948, he married June Marie Newman in Hawarden. For three years, they made their home in Orange City, where he was a painter. They then moved to Union County, S.D., where he farmed.
They then farmed at Orange City from 1957 to 1989, when they retired into town. In December of 2006, he became a resident of the Heritage House. Pete was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and spending time with his family, especially his grandchilden. He also liked to participate in the farmers market, and Mr. and Mrs. Vanden Berge wintered in Florida for several years. Survivors include his wife of 59 years; daughters and their husbands Vicky and Mike Paulson of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Rhonda and Merlyn Ten Clay of Wichita, Kan.; son and his wife Mark and Nancy Vanden Berge
of Sioux Falls, S.D.; seven grandchildren, Heather D'Antonio, Heath Paulson and his wife Christine, Maria and her husband Justin Scherer, Nathan Ten Clay, Mitchell Vanden Berge,
Allie Vanden Berge, and Mataya Vanden Berge; great- grandchildren Matthew and Tyler Paulson; sister Ruth De Vries of Orange City; brother and his wife James and Judy Vanden Berge, of Traverse City, Mich.; and brother-in-law Dr. Thomas Kiernan, of Barrington, Ill.
He was preceded in death by grandson-in-law Frank D’Antonia, brother Lloyd Vanden Berge, sisters Jean Hawkins and Darlene Kiernan and brothers-in-law Richard Hawkins and Frank
De Vries.
