Richard Meis
Richard Meis, 70, of Granville died Friday, September 2, 1994, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital after a long illness. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the St Joseph's Cathlic Church in Granville with the Rev. Clem Currans officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 95 and the V. F. W. Post 5347 under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa.

Mr, Meis was born May 9, 1924, in rural LeMars, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Katherine (Roerig) Meis. He was raised in the Le Mars area and attended rural school. He worked as a farm laborer in the Le Mars area. He married Mary Jane Kreber March 1, 1949, in Le Mars. The couple made their home near Merrill, Iowa, where he farmed.

Mr. Meis entered the army December 2,1950, and served in Korea. H6 was discharged November 30, 1951. They moved to near Hospers, Iowa, where he again farmed. In 1953, they moved to Granville, where he operated his own corn shelling and feed business for many years. He worked for the V.F.W. Club, and in 1963, began working for the City of Granville. In 1973, he went to work for Russell Ready Mix of Orange City, Iowa, where he worked until he retired.

Mary Jane died March 17, 1980. He married Bonnie (Bennett) Steenholdt May 9,1981, in Granville. The couple made their home in Granville. Bonnie died May 3,1994. Mr. Meis was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Rights of Columbus, the V.F.W. and American Legion of Paullina, Iowa, the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Le Mars, and had been a past member of the Granville volunteer
fire department of 35 years.

Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Carol and Richard Ellington of Plattsmouth, NE, Joyce and Paul Wray of Ames, I A, Mary and Fred Cerwick of Sioux Falls, SD, and Karen and Tim Pottebaum of Hospers, IA; two sons and their wives, Roger and Lynette Meis of Paullina and Steve and Pattie Meis of Orange City; a son-in-law and his wife, David and Kim Brandon of Elk Point, SD; a stepson and his wife, Richard and Susanne Steenholdt of Vermillion, SD; a stepdaughter and her husband, Karen and Gerry Henricksen of Hazen, NE; 17 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four brothers, Ray of Granville Clarence (Huck) and his wife Ethel of Granville, Herb and his wife JoAnn of South Sioux City, and Edward of Le Mars; six sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Tillie) Wolf of Le Mars, Mrs. Toofie (Marian) Abdalla of Fort Dodge, IA, Margaret and her husband Francis Grau of Littleton, CO, Janet and her husband Lou Chandiatti of Huntington Beach, CA, Mrs. Alvin (Joan) VanSteenwykeof Lakewood, C A, and Ruth and her husband Charlie Marienau of Des Moines, IA.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. David (Nancy) Brandon; and a brother, Leonard.
