SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Mildred Schutt, 85, of Sioux Center died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the
Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Saturday in
Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Mildred (Vermeer) Schutt was born Jan. 7,1922, in Sioux Center. She was the fourth of 11 children born to Edward E. and Alida (Borgman) Vermeer. She began her education in a country school, but in fourth grade, she transferred to the
public school in town, following the death of her father. She graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1939 and attended Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, for two summers. She then taught country school for three years, then began working as a legal secretary. She married Gerald Schutt on June 29, 1945. He preceded
her in death on Sept. 6, 1975. She enjoyed working for many years as a legal secretary for Maurie TePaske, then mayor of Sioux Center. Because of unfortunate health issues, she entered the Sioux Center Nursing Wing in December 1980 and eventually transferred to Royale Meadows Care Center. She received wonderful loving care at both facilities until her death. She was an active member of First Reformed Church and had a deep Christian faith. She was a foster grandparent at Hope Haven for several years, where she enjoyed working with special needs children. She is survived by three chili dren, David and Barb Schutt of Wyoming, Mich., Mary and Steve Andrews of Omaha and Mark and Tracy Schutt of David City, Neb.; six granddaughters, Kara and Matthew Boekenhauer of Milwaukee, Wis., Kendra and Gabe Carlson of Des Moines, Cassandra and Ryan Wineteer of Lincoln, Neb., Britni and Tony Wilbrand of Lincoln, Neb., Kelsey Schutt of Lincoln and Carlin Andrews of Omaha; five great-grandchildren; three brothers and their wives, Loyd and Helen Vermeer of Sioux Center, Wallace and Jo Vermeer of Orange City, Iowa, and Wayne and Shirley Vermeer of Clearwater, Fla.; five sisters, Edna Van Roekel of Fulda, Minn., Aldine Van Roekel of Orange City, Hester Black of Coon Rapids, Minn., Cynthia Kaskey of Aurelia, Iowa, and Ruth Bonnema of Orange City; a sister and brother-in-law, Elnore and Dan Niffenegger of Lexington, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Ellen Vermeer of Sioux
Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Irwin Vermeer; and six brothers-in-law, Gershom Van Roekel, John Van Roekel, Darrell Black, Delaine Kolb, Earl Bonnema and Eugene Kaskey.
