Dean M. Oggel, 83, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at a Sioux City retirement home.
Memorial services; will be at noon Saturday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Verdery Kerr officiating, private burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction Northside Funeral Home.
Mr. Oggel was born Dec.10, 1914, in Maurice, Iowa, the son of Dr. Herman D. and Maude (Mensink) Oggel. He received his bachelor of arts degree and a certificate in journalism from the University of Iowa, in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army in the China-Burma-India Theater during; World War II. He was a medic and later became a correspondent for YANK an Army Weekly magazine for soldiers, based in Calcutta, India. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal with a pendant for meritorious achievement. He married Inez Shibley on April 20, 1941, in Luverne, Minn. He was employed as a Sunday editor and night news editor with the Sioux City Journal from 1941 to 1974. Then as a managing editor with St. Cloud (Minn.) Daily Times from 1974 to 1976. In earlier years, he was employed with Lamoni (Iowa) Chronicle, Dewitt (Iowa) Observer, O'Brien County (Iowa) Bell and Pipestone County (Minn.) Star. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi arid Alpha Tau Omega at the University of Iowa. In St. Cloud, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Golden Kiwanis Club and
American Legion Post. In Sioux City, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee and elder.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dr. James and his wife, Ynes, of Sioux City and Mark of the Seattle, Wash, area; five grandchildren', Christian, Graham, Hayley and Evan Oggel and Kristopher Byam.
