Obituary: HAWARDEN, IOWA- DONALD C. SCHMIDT, 78, of Hawarden, died Monday, September 3, 2007 at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Melanie Wallschlaeger officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery with Military Rites by the Albert E. Hoschler Post #186 of Akron, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Donald Carl John Schmidt was born November 12, 1928, the son of John G. and Hilda (Frerichs) Schmidt. He attended the first 8 years of school at a country school and graduated from LeMars High School in 1947. After graduation, he farmed. He served from 1951 to 1953 in the 21st Engineers Combat Battalion of the U.S. Army. Part of this time was spent at Fairbanks, Alaska. Upon his honorable discharge, he continued farming.
On January 25, 1955, he was united in marriage to Marlys J. Larson at the Methodist Church in Hawarden, IA. They farmed in the Craig and Brunsville area until 1961, when they moved to Marlys’ grandparents’ farm east of Hawarden. They continued farming until 2004 when they retired, but continued to live on the farm. This farm became a Century Farm in 2005. Due to failing health, Don and Marlys moved to Hillcrest Health Care Center in November 2006. His wife, Marlys, died on March 16, 2007.
Don was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Hawarden and the American Legion of Akron.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth J. (Carla) Schmidt of Hawarden, his daughter, Mary M. (Larry) Reppe of Sioux Falls, S.D., six grandchildren; Stephanie (Chris) Hofer of Beresford, S.D., Steven Schmidt of Hawarden, Sarah (Jose’) Mora of Alton, IA. Adam and Brian Reppe of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kendra Schmidt of Hawarden; five great-grandchildren; Jackson Hofer, Christopher and Taylor Sue Schmidt, Antwun and Dominic Mora, his sister, Derith Robertson of Akron and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys, his parents, John and Hilda Schmidt, his in-laws, Clarence and Alleda Larson and his brother-in-law, Calvin Robertson.
