Obituary: HAWARDEN, IOWA- IONE MAXINE MILLER, 85, formerly of Hawarden, Iowa, died Thursday, November 8, 2007 at Golden Living Center in Walker, Minnesota.
Funeral Service will be Monday, November 12, at 10:30 a.m. at the Associated Church in Hawarden with the Reverend Tim Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday, with the family present from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mrs. Miller was born March 17, 1922, in Garretson, South Dakota, the daughter of Ed and Emma Pederson. She graduated from the Garretson High School in 1940. In January 1944, after graduation from South Dakota State, she began teaching Home Economics at the High School in Hawarden, Iowa. Ione married Warren "Bing" Miller December 23, 1945. In June of 1946 she left teaching and moved to the Miller Farmstead. She spent the next 20 years raising their family, helping with school, and 4-H. In 1968, she went back to teaching at West Sioux High School until her retirement in 1985.
In January of 1986, she and Warren moved to Hawarden. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December 1995. In 2002, after Warren’s death, Ione moved to Walker, Minnesota, to be close to her daughter and grandchildren.
During her retirement years in Hawarden, she enjoyed her volunteer work at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop and hospital receptionist. The Associated Church, extension club, P.E.O., MIC, and Delta Kappa Gamma, are other activities she enjoyed.
Surviving relatives include a son and his wife, Larry W. and Marilyn Miller of Guthrie, Oklahoma; a daughter and her husband, Marcie and Gary DeVries of Walker, Minnesota; her grandchildren, Adam DeVries and his wife Michelle, and Melissa DeVries; and great-grandchildren, Grant and Gwendolyn DeVries; sister, Leola Graff; sister-in-law, Babe Edmundson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren; sister, Junie Remme; and brother, Leonard Edmundson.
