Obituary: HAWARDEN, IOWA- IDA A. JOHNSON, 91, of Hawarden, Iowa died Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Mrs. Johnson will be buried next to her husband in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Friday, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Friday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Ida Agnes Eickhoff was born March 11, 1916, in Wayne, Nebraska, the seventh child of Frederick and Hermine (Boschen) Eickhoff. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wayne.
After the death of her mother, she lived with various siblings, lastly with her sister, Margaret Simons, and family in the Hawarden, Iowa area. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1933 and on December 10, 1934 she married Elmer R. "Bud" Johnson in Wayne, Nebraska. The couple farmed in South Dakota, north of Hawarden and east of Akron, before moving to Hawarden in 1945. They were married more than 61 years.
Ida worked part time for Tilgners, the Lee Store, Otis Radio, and West Sioux Veterinary Clinic until Bud retired.
She began volunteering at the Thrift Shop in 1977, was Co-chairman in 1982 and Chairman in 1990 until she retired in 1996, having worked more than 12, 000 hours.
Ida spent many hours working with civic groups over the years: Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Garden Club, General Women’s Club, Duell, collected for many charities, was on the finance board of the Hawarden Medical Center Drive, helped plan and plant the Welcome flower bed, along with designing and helping to build two of their personal homes.
At church, Ida was active as a Sunday School teacher, VBS teacher, belonged to Ladies’ Aid, Dorcas Society, and Women’s Missionary League, both locally and at the regional level.
Because of her active civic involvement, she was selected Citizen of the Year for 1994 and parade marshal for the 1995 Big Sioux River Days Parade.
Knitting on her machine and making quilts for her grandchildren were a joy for her.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Gordon and Patricia Johnson of Pawleys Island, South Carolina; two daughters and their husbands, Janice and Richard Paulson of Omaha, Nebraska and Patricia and Paul Salomone of Syracuse, New York; a foster daughter-in-law, Lillian Simons of Broomfield, Colorado; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband; foster son, James C. Simons; her parents.
