Obituary: HAWARDEN, IOWA- MELVIN R. HULLEMAN, 82, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 4, 2007, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hawarden American Lutheran Church with Rev. Don Salberg and hospice Chaplain Marie Lykken officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery with Military Rites by the American Legion and VFW of Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Melvin R. Hulleman was born April 30, 1925, to Dick and Mildred (Meyers) Hulleman in Hawarden, Iowa. He attended Hawarden High Schools until joining the US Navy at age 17. Mel served on a mine sweeper in the Aleutian Islands as a Baker 1st Class. After his discharge he worked as a baker and then at the Hawarden Cleaners where he met his wife, Mary. They were married on October 26, 1951 in Hawarden.
Mel served as the Chief of Police for 27 years and on the Hawarden City Council from 1988-1995. He then drove school bus for the West Sioux Schools for 11 years retiring in 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Dwight of Hawarden and Michael (Cheryl) of Harrisburg, South Dakota; one daughter Yarda (Randy) Wiand of Hawarden; three grandchildren, Wade (Leigh) Wiand of Madrid, Iowa, Brandi (Ben) Hoesing of Boone, Iowa, and Jeff (Leslie) Hulleman of Clarksville, Tennessee; and one great-grandchild, Emily. He also has four surviving sisters, Winnie (Vernon) Van Buskirk of Canton, South Dakota, Rachel Hulleman of Hawarden, Judy (Gene) Nelson of Canon City, Colorado, and Millie (Ralph) Rasmussen of Alcester, South Dakota; one brother, Tom (Marlene) Hulleman of Sioux City, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Neoma and her husband Harvey Millikan of Cherokee, Iowa, a brother, Martin and his wife Mabel of Hawarden, and a brother-in-law, Chips Waterman, also of Hawarden.
