BORN: May 21, 1922, Bemis, South Dakota
PASSED AWAY: November 10, 2007, Orange City, Iowa
Marie Boersma, the daughter of Nick and Nellie (VanderZee) Hoitsma was born May 21, 1922 near Bemis, South Dakota. She attended school in Deuel County and later taught country school. On December 22, 1944, she was united in marriage to Harry Boersma at her family home near Bemis, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple settled on a farm west of Hospers, Iowa, where they farmed until their retirement in 1982. At that time the couple moved into Hospers. Marie became a resident of the Heritage Nursing Home in December of 2005. She passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the Orange City Area Health System in Orange City, Iowa reaching the age of 85 years, 5 months and 20 days.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hospers, where she taught Sunday School and Catechism and was a member of the Women’s Association. She was active in the World Home Bible League.
Marie leaves to cherish her memory, two sons and daughters-in-law, Darold and Becky Boersma of Alton, Iowa and Don and Flori Boersma of Hospers, Iowa; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley Fernstrum of Primghar, Iowa and Helen and Jim Babcock of San Bernardino, California; a sister, Iva Schmidt of Clear Lake, South Dakota. She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; a son and daughter-in-law, LeRoy and Florence; her parents, three brothers, Clarence, Leonard and Floyd and a sister, Thresa Schiefelbein.
