James A. De Wit, 91, of Holstein died Tuesday, February 20, at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Curtis Benson officiating. Burial was in the Holstein Cemetery with full military rites by Dessel-Schmidt American Legion Post #225 of Holstein.

De Wit was born February 3, 1916, to Neal & Johanna (Zevenbergen) De Wit in Ocheyedan. He grew up in the Sioux Center area and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1933. He worked at Smith's Bakery in Sioux Center until he was drafted in 1941. He married Maria Kuyper on February 10, 1943, before being sent overseas. After the war he worked in a bakery in Rock Valley where they lived. In 1953 the couple bought the bakery in Holstein which they ran until he retired in 1981. In addition to being a wonderful baker, he was a gardener. He also loved to travel and while serving in the Army, he traveled to Holland. While in the U.S., he visited almost every state.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Maria of Holstein; his four children, Mary Jo Kindt and husband Allen of Vilas, North Carolina; Mark De Wit of Rockwall, Texas; Christine Keitges and husband Robert of Alamosa, Colorado, and James De Wit and wife Mary Ann of Bay Minette, Alabama; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his brother and sisters, Julius De Wit of Canby, MN; Adrianna Kuyper and husband Eugene of Arkadelphia, AR; Agnes Brawner of Galva, IL; Helen Vermeer and husband Loyd of Sioux Center, Edie Lubach and husband Howard of Sioux Center; Gene De Wit and wife Norma of Canby.

He was preceded in death by a son-in -law, Dennis Johnston; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
