OBITUARY - HENDRIK VAN ZEE.
Mr. Hendrik Van Zee, 83. died at his home east of Middleburg, Sunday morning following a lingering illness. Mr. Van Zee was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 31, 1857, a son of Dirk and Pietje Van Zee. On March 9, 1891, at Pella, he married Artje Ver Ploeg and to this union 13 children were born. Those who preceded him in death were his wife, who died February 29, 1932, two sons, Peter Arie who died June 17, 1893, and Dick on November 24, 1889. Also three daughters died infancy on February 25, 1896, Henrietta on March 13, 1908, and Ella (Mrs. Robt. Moret) on February 22, 1916. Surviving are five sons, Conrad of Rock Valley, John of Sanborn, Dick of Little Rock, Peter of Boyden, Anthony of Orange City, and three daughters, Maggie (Mrs. Ben Borgman) of Sheldon, Priscilla (Mrs. Ed Borgman) of Sibley, and Deverta (Mrs. John Hoffs) of Hospers. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Lane Weyers, Mrs. Ben Tickler, one brother Dirk, all of Pella, 29 grandchildren and 14 g-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday April 10, 1940 at 1:00 p.m. from the residence and at 1:30 p.m. from the Reformed Church of Middleburg. The Reverend Mr. C. Groot officiated. Burial was in the Sioux Center cemetery.
Mr. Van Zee was engaged in farming, living five years after his marriage near Pella, then moved to Sioux County where he farmed for seven years south of Hull and the past forty years east of Middleburg.
