OBITUARIES - JOHN VAN ENGEN.
John Van Engen, 54. died Saturday afternoon at his home north of Sioux Center, la., following a lingering illness. Mr. Van Engen was born at Orange City, on September 23, 1884, where he lived and grow to manhood. On Febr. 29, 1898, he was married to Tena Van Roekel. Fourteen children were born to them. Two of whom preceded him in death, a son Gerrit at the age of four and a daughter Alice, at the age of eight years. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Abraham of Sheldon. John, Gerrit, George, William and Albert all of Sioux Center, Mrs. J. Baker of Sibley, Mrs. Nick Cupedus [*Cuperus?] of Hull, Mrs. Mitchell Vander Veen of Hull, Johanna, Hermina and Tena all of Sioux Center. He is also survived by two brothers, Gerrit Van Engen of Boyden, John Timmer of Rock Rapids, and three sisters, Mrs. Albert Lyzen of Alton, Mrs. Henry Ketel of Bigelow, Minn., and Mrs. Henry Den Hartog of Orange City, and also 11 grandchildren. Mr. Van Engen was engaged in farming, having farmed for 15 years near Alton, eight years near Archer, and the past three years north of Sioux Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday. February 28, 1939, at 1 o'clock at the home and at 1:30 at the First Christian Reformed church at Sioux, with the Rev. Mr. J. Haan of Hull officiating assisted by Rev. Mr. J. Aberson of Rock Valley. Interment was made in the Orange City cemetery.
