Edward J . Vander Wilt
Edward John Gerrit Vander Wilt, 90, of Orange City, formerly of Hospers, died Thursday, May 5, 2005 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital. Funeral service was Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Christian Reformed Church in Hospers with the Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiating. Graveside service was at 1:30 p.m. at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, with the Rev. Kenneth Van De Griend officiating.
Vander Wilt was born on July 10, 1914, at Hospers, the son of John and Jennie (Bloemendaal) Vander Wilt. He was raised in Hospers where he attended the Hospers Christian School and later Western Christian Academy in Hull.
On December 18, 1935, he married Nancy Bernice Harmsen at Sheldon. They farmed northwest of Hospers until 1944, when they moved into town. She died March 17, 1999, at Sioux City. Shortly after his wife's passing, he moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. In earlier years, he owned and operated One Stop Service in Hospers, a service station and car dealership. He was also an inventor, mechanic and truck driver. He was a lifelong member of Hospers Christian Reformed Church where he was involved in the Men's Society and taught Sunday school classes. He had also been a member of the Hospers Christian School Board at the time their most recent building was constructed. The couple looked forward to winters in Texas and summers at various lakes in Minnesota. He also enjoyed auto racing and fishing.
Survivors include his two daughters, Jennie Marilyn Beimers of Hospers and Wanda J . and her husband, the Rev. Ken Van De Griend of Waupun, Wisconsin; five grandchildren and their spouses; 12 greatgrandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Angeline Elgersma of Sanborn.
He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Lloyd Beimers; and two brothers, Arnold and his wife Mae, and Arthur.
