Mitchell R. Verburg
Mitchell R. Verburg, a former Maurice resident, died on December
25, 2003. Mitchell was born May 13, 1915, in Coutts, Alberta, Canada. He moved with his family to Orange City in 1923, to Maurice in 1924 and graduated from Maurice High School in 1933. Prior to his military career he was an independent truck driver hauling produce and poultry from Iowa to the eastern United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mabel Verburg, his brother Wallace and sister Eileen Wepfer.
Mitchell is survived by his wife Margaret of 61 years and sons Mitchell, Jr., and wife Anke, Mark and daughter Marian Volk. He also had two grandsons, Eric Verburg and wife Gail, and
Guy Volk and one great-grandson Steven. Mitchell retired after 24 years on active duty as a lieutenant colonel. During his tour of duty he worked with the allied military government in Italy.
He was an avid genealogist and a fierce competitor on the cribbage board. He was a direct descendent of Tjeerd Fooke Heemstra, one of the earliest settlers of Sioux County.
The memorial service was held in Colorado Springs, Colo., on January 5, 2004.
