Sioux Center News, November 16, 1958

Funeral services were held at the First Reformed Church at Hull at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday for Mrs. Gerrit De Leeuw, 81, resident of Hull community for the past 45 years, and mother of Mrs. G. C. Vande Garde of Sioux Center, who died at the local Community hospital Sunday following a lengthy illness.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Nick Rozeboom and burial was made in Hope Cemetery at Hull. Van Etten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. De Leeuw, nee Aaltje Schilder, was born in The Netherlands, June 30, 1876. She grew to young womanhood there and was married to Gerrit De Leeuw in Holland, April 9, 1903. The following year they moved to the United States and settled on a farm near Middleburg, in Sioux County. After a year's residence there, they moved to a farm near Perkins where they lived for eight years prior to moving in 1912 to a farm northeast of Hull. This remained their home for approximately 30 years. They retired from the farm in 1942 and moved into Hull.

Mr. & Mrs. De Leeuw observed their golden wedding anniversary April 9, 1953. Mr. De Leeuw passed away March 10, 1957.

Survivors include three sons, Gerrit of Hull, Ben of Lakewood, CA; and Henry of Hull; six daughters, Ann (Mrs. Ben Gritters) of Bellflower, CA; Harriet (Mrs. Raymond Hallmark) of Stockton, CA; Alice (Mrs. Mike Lunstra) of Visalia, CA; Mrs. Bertha Moss of Hull; Goldie (Mrs. Chester De Boer) of Hull; and Marguerite (Mrs. G. C. Vande Garde) of Sioux Center; two brothers, Barteldt and Eimert of Holland; 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
