Lyla Beth Vanden Hoek, 66, Sanborn, died Sunday, June 5, at Prairie View Home in Sanborn.
Services were Wednesday, June 8, at First Reformed Church in Sanborn, with the Rev. Gary Hegstad of officiating. Burial was at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home.
Lyla Vanden Hoek, daughter of Jurrian "Jerry" and Sarah "Dolly" (Wiersma) Reinsma, was born Sept. 4, 1944, in Orange City. She was raised in Orange City and attended Orange City Christian School and Western Christian High School in Hull. She then moved to Corsica, SD, and worked as a nursing assistant at Good Samaritan Nursing Home. While working in Corsica, SD, she met her future husband, Richard Dale Vanden Hoek. They were married Jan. 3, 1964, in Orange City.
They began their married life in Springfield, SD, where he finished his teaching degree at Southern State College. They lived in Gettysburg, SD, for one year,
and his teaching career led them in 1966 to Sanborn, where they were living. She had a debilitating stroke on Dec. 2, 2010. She was an active member of First Reformed Church in
Sanborn. She was the senior for many years, organist, pianist and Reformed Church Youth
Fellowship sponsor, and she accompanied for special music groups. Her love of music spread
over many years and many venues. She taught piano and organ; she played for high school small and large group contests, the Gloryland Quartet, and church services at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley; and she would perform organ recitals for area churches that purchased a new organ. She was an active member of the community of Sanborn, playing and directing Easter and
Christmas cantatas, babysitting for many different families, and working for 21 years as a teaching assistant at Hartley-Melvin- Sanborn Middle School. She loved being a grandmother,
scrap booking, traveling, playing canasta and fellow shipping with friends during card club.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Vanden Hoek of Sanborn; three children, Douglas and Deb Vanden Hoek of Omaha, NE, Tamara and Rich Unland of Indianapolis and Crissa and
Eric Krikke of Sanborn; 10 grandchildren; her mother, Sarah "Dolly" Reinsma of Sanborn; a brother, Larry and Audrey Reinsma of Wheaton, IL; and a sister, Lois and Frank Russell of
Shatter, CA.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jurrian Reinsma, and a sister, Leann Bieseker.
