Ervin M. Herrig, 83, of Alton, died Monday, July 9,2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Rev. James Tigges and Msgr. Nicholas J. Ruba officiated. BurialwasatSt.Mary'sCemetery in Alton under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home, Remsen. Grave side military services were conducted by Floyd Post 200 American Legion.
Ervin was born Oct. 30, 1917, at rural Alton, the son of Michael and Catherine (Ambrosy) Herrig. He was raised in the Alton area and received his education in both the rural school and St. Mary's Academy in Alton. He then went into partnership in Frederes and Herrig Trucking in Alton. On July 8, 1941, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII, being discharged June 26, 1945.
Ervin then returned to Alton and established Herrig Trucking in Alton which he operated until retiring in 1983. He was also engaged in the cattle-feeding business for 20 years.
He married the former Helen Alesch on Sept. 23,1946, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. The couple made their Home in Alton. After his retirement, Ervin worked part time for St. Mary's Parish in Alton.
Mr. Herrig was a memberof St. Mary's Catholic Church and Floyd Post 200 American Legion, both of Alton and the Knights of Columbus of Granville.
Survivors include his wife Helen of Alton; a daughter Kathleen and her husband Tim Graca of Burnsville, Minn.; three sons, Chuck and his wife Cathy of Sergeant Bluff, Don of Lake View and Jim of Iowa City; seven grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Herrig of Alton. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael; a daughter, Jolene Herrig; three brothers, Clarence, Gilbert and Edmund; and two sisters, Angeline Plathe and Celestine Krogman.
