J. Asa Moody Dies at Salem Pioneer Hawarden Hotel Man Passed
Away Last Friday Night J.. Asa Moody, pioneer Hawarden citizen and long time prominent business man here, died at 9 o'clock last Friday evening at his home at Salem, S. D. He was 76 years of age and had been in failing health for some time.
|Mr. Moody was One of the principal moving spirits in the early days of Hawarden. He came here shortly after the town was established and for many years conducted the Depot Hotel, which was erected by the North Western Railway Company. In addition to the hotel business he interested himself in various other local enterprises,

He platted a sub-division of the town and was regarded in his day as one of the real community builders. His eating house became famous all through this section for the slogan which he carried, "A cup of coffee like mother used to make." He was always a popular host with the traveling public and enjoyed an extensive acquaintance.

Mr. Moody sold his hotel business here in 1904 and moved with his family. to Minneapolis where they resided until 1907 when he purchased a hotel at Salem which he has since continued to operate. Until the past summer the hotel at Salem was located just across the track from the North Western depot there, but then it was moved to a new location in the business section of the town.

Mr. Moody is survived by his widow and one son, Clarence Moody, of Salem, and one daughter, Mrs. Florence Fay of Webster City, Iowa. His youngest daughter, Mrs. Helen Boughner, passed away last June. The many old Hawarden friends of the family will extend sincere sympathy in the death of Mr. Moody.
