Hawarden Independent of Jan 26, 1933 p.6

Dan Montgomery Called by Death Friends here received word of the death of Donald Montgomery at St. Mary's hospital at Pierre, S. D., early last Friday morning, after an illness of only a few days. He was taken ill the Sunday previous and pneumonia with complications resulted in his death.

His three children, Mrs. Birdie(Mitchell, Miss Alice and Garfield, were near him when he passed to his final reward. He was buried at Salem, S. D. beside the remains of his wife, who preceded him in death several years.

Mr. Montgomery had passed four score years and had lived a vigorous and useful life. He was one of the early settlers of Reading township. His farm is now owned and occupied by N. O. Westre and was one of the best improved, most beautiful farm homes in this part of the country. He was prominent in all the progress of church, school, fraternal and civic circles as well as in political affairs. He was honest in all the aforementioned fields. He was a leader in Methodism in Ireton. Much credit is due him for the church and parsonage buildings. In church he held every position of trust and responsibility. One of the Beautiful stained glass memorial windows of the church, which was destroyed by fire some 11 years ago, was a memorial to his daughter Anna, who died in India as a missionary.

A loyal, patriotic American, who took great pride in his citizenship, he was honored by his fellow citizens and placed in positions of responsibility and trust in township and county. He was a member of the legislature for one term from Sioux county. Mr. Montgomery had many qualities which won him friends and his enemies always conceded that he was not to be moved when he thought he was right.

He moved away from here twenty or more years ago, going west as far as Montana but of late years has made his home in South Dakota. There are several landmarks in Ireton and vicinity which can be pointed out in which he had worked or assisted in building or bringing- to pass. He was one of a large family, several of his sisters having gone before him. Mrs. McKelvie and Mrs. Bennett, both at one time living here, were his sisters.
