Tragic Death of Former Ireton Man
The many friends of Edward G. Montgomery were deeply saddened when they read the Saturday Sioux City papers account of his accidental death. The Journal gives the following account of it.
Edward Garfield Montgomery, 56, a realtor here, was wounded mortally late Friday afternoon by the accidental discharge of a shotgun he was cleaning in the basement of his home at 3733 Orleans Avenue.
Mr. Montgomery’s body was found by his wife, Winifred, when she returned home from a shopping trip in the downtown business district. Dr. J. M. Krigsten, Woodbury county coroner, at the conclusion of investigation said that the death was accidental.A charge from a 14 gauge automatic shotgun entered Mr. Montgomery in the abdomen, Coroner Krigsten said death was instantaneous. Coronor Krigsten said he learned that Mr. Montgomery recently had purchased the gun to hunt pheasants this fall in South Daktoa. Rage and cleaning equipment were found near the body to bear out the theory that Mr. Montgomery was killed while cleaning the gun. The victim was alone in the house at the time.
Mr. Montgomery had been engaged in the real estate business here for five years. He came here from Brooking, SD, where for 19 years he had been engaged in the real estate and loan business.
Mr. Montgomery was born April 30, 1881 at Aurora IL, When he was 2 years old he moved with his parents to Ireton, Iowa, where he lived until he was 28 years old. On August 9, 1913 He married Winifred Siberts at Seattle WA. The couple made their home at Brookings following a honeymoon trip.
Surviving, besides the widow, are four sons, Robert Montgomery of Indianola, Iowa, and Paul, Gordon and Donald of Sioux City and a daughter Alice of Sioux City. The body was taken to Richards funeral home in Morningside pending completion of arrangements, The writer of these items was very intimate with the Montgomery family and knew Garfleld, the son, well in youth and young manhood, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Montgomery.
They owned and farmed the place now owned by N. O. Westre, 3 1/2 miles south of Ireton, and their home was always open to young and old alike. They came here in 1883 and for 26 years the place was well known as the Montgomery place. Garfleld, as he was known here, attended high school in Ireton and was one of those vivacious, likable lads popular with everybody. He had three sisters, Anna (Mrs Briggs) was a missionary and died in India; Birdie married Attorney Mitchell and Alice has been a very successful teacher in some of the larger schools. His parents have been dead for some years.
The funeral was held at 11 o'clock Monday morning from the Richards funeral home, Rev. Oliver M. Keve, pastor of Grace Methodist church, officiating. Burial was made in Graceland Park cemetery.
