Vellinga, Mrs. Wm. (Geeltje) - 1853-1937

Sioux County Capital, November 4, 1937

Following an illness of five weeks, Mrs. Wm. Vellinga passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Johannes Van Oort, on Friday, Oct. 29. She had attained the age of 84 years and 5 months. Mrs. Vellinga, nee Geeltje Vander Ploeg was born in The Netherlands, May 29, 1853. She became an orphan at an early age and came to America with her brothers and a sister shortly after. They settled at Pella. At the age of 18 she was married to Mr. Wm. Vellinga. Soon after that the young couple came to Sioux County and settled on a farm northeast of Orange City. In 1900 they moved to Orange City. Mr. Vellinga died in 1925. Surviving children are Evert Vellinga, Mrs. Johannes Van Oort, Mrs. Jacob Van Rooyen of Alton, Mrs. Gerrit Hofmeyer, Mrs. Richard Haak, Mrs. (Rev) Albert Wassink of Inwood, and Mrs. Henry Vogel of Hospers. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home and 1:30 at the First Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. Mr. Bronkema officiating assisted by Rev. Mr. H. Colenbrander. Interment was made in the Orange City Cemetery.

NOTE: On Genlias Geeltje van der Ploeg was born May 29, 1853, and her birth recorded on May 30, 1853, she was born in the Province of Friesland, Municipality of Kollumerland (Archive Location - Tresoar, Frysk Histoarysk en Letterkundich Sintrum. Her parents were: Kornelis Ruurds van der Ploeg and Janke Jans de Boer.
