Robert John was the son of Walter and Jennie (Smits) Schreur. He was raised at Alton, where he graduated from high school. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
On June 14, 1955, he married Leona Mae Riphagen at Hull. They made their home in Alton, where "Bob" was employed by the Alton Cement Works. He later joined the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Alton and Carnes. After over thirty years, he retired as
assistant manager in 1989. He was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where he had
served on the consistory as an elder and a deacon. He was a member of the founding board of directors of Inspiration Hills and served on the committee which developed-the Puddlejumper Trail. He was a former member of the Alton Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Bonnie and her husband, Ron Hawks, of Waverly, Illinois; Barb Schreur of Washington, Iowa; Rhonda and her husband, Bill Zahren, of Sioux City; Mindy Schreur and her fiance, Patrick Sullivan, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Jodi and her husband, Jake Belcher, of Storm Lake; five grandchildren, Caleb Hawks, Haley and Jena Zahren, Kyle Sullivan and Brooke Belcher; five sisters, Geraldine Schreur of Alton; Gertrude Gustad of Volin, South Dakota; Dorothy Lubben of Brunsville; Loretta Carney of Marcus; and Joyce Van Wettering of Hospers; and two brothers, Arend of Sioux City; and Raymond of Alton.
