Hawarden - Henry Van Sloten, 80, Hawarden, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, following complications from heart surgery.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., today (Saturday, Aug. 9), at Hawarden Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. Nathan de Vries officiating. Burial will be at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden, under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Henry Van Sloten, son of John & Nettie (Van Maanen) Van Sloten Sr., was born April 13, 1923, in Hull. He served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He married Annie Jeanette Huenink on Dec. 19, 1945, in Rock Valley.

They farmed in the Hawarden area until 1975 when they moved into town. He then worked for Scrogg's Feed & Grain for several years.

He was a member of Hawarden Christian Reformed Church and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed farming, woodworking, yard work and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Van Sloten of Hawarden; three sons, Don & Verla Van Sloten of Ireton, Rick & Wanda Van Sloten of Sioux Center, and Henry Jr. & Lori Van Sloten of Hawarden; a daughter, Deb & Bill De Jong of Hawarden; 12 grandchildren; a brother, Bill Van Sloten of Sioux Center, and three sisters, Coba and Ted Boersma of Rock Valley, Henrietta Olivier of Bellflower, Ca, and Geraldine Klomp of Rock Valley.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William Van Sloten, John Van Sloten and Gerrit Van Sloten.

Memorials may be directed to Ireton Christian School.
