DEATH OF MRS. MARY RUTTAN
END CAME SATURDAY EVENING FOLLOWING OPERATION
Deceased Was 69 Years of Age and Had Resided in This Community for About 35 Years

Mrs. Mary Ruttan passed away at the Hawarden hospital about 6 o'clock Saturday evening following an operation for appendicitis. She was taken sick the preceding Saturday night and Sunday night she was taken to the hospital where she submitted to an operation. Her condition was found to be much more serious than was hoped and physicians held out no hopes for her recovery from the first, although she seemed to improve until on Friday when she took a sudden turn for the worse. She suffered a great deal during her brief illness but when the end came she passed away peacefully. She had been in fairly good health but had suffered two bad attacks previous to the last one.

Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock at the Catholic church Monday monring and solemn requiem high mass was conducted by Rev. Fr. B. O'Reilly, assisted by Rev. Fr. A. J. Lynott of Leeds, Iowa, and Rev. Fr. Casey of Akron. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.

Mary Kelly was born in County Mayo, Ireland, May 27, 1854, and died December 22, 1923, so had attained the age of 69 years, 6 months and 26 days. In 1871 she immigrated to America and in September, 1887, she was united in marriage with Simon G. Ruttan at Great Barrington, Mass. Her husband preceded her in death more than sixteen years ago, passing away in 1907. She came to Sioux county with her husband in 1888, one year following her marriage, and settled in the southeastern part of the county and later moved onto their farm four miles south of Hawarden where she made her home until 1909 when she moved to town.

The deceased was ever a faithful Christian and a kind and loving mother. She expressed her desire to leave this earth when the hand of death was ready to claim her. She leaves to mourn her sudden departure two sons, William and Wesley of Hawarden, two brothers, Michael Kelly of Hawarden and Thomas Kelly of New York, one sister at Pittsburg, Mass., and a host of friends. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family in their great loss of an affectionate mother.

The following out-of-town people attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Bremmon of Omaha, Joe, Will and Thos. Kelly of Early and Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Callahan of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
