Death of Simon Ruttan

This community [Hawarden] was greatly shocked Monday evening [May 27] to learn of the death of Simon Ruttan, a prominent farmer residing four miles south of town. But few had heard of his illness, although he had been under the doctor's care for nearly two months. He was first taken with pleurisy which was followed by pneumonia, and the latter ailment was the immediate cause of his death.

The deceased was born in Canada and was 56 years of age the 17th of March. He was married to Mary Kelley at Barrington, Wis., and they came to Sioux county to see her brothers on their wedding trip in 1888. They decided to remain here and settled on the Konard farm nine miles southeast of Hawarden. Later he moved onto his present farm south of town. He was a good citizen and neighbor and was highly respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and two sons to mourn his death.

The funeral was held at the Catholic church in this city Wednesday forenoon and the remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing friends.
