Albert J. Mouw September 15, 1931 - February 6, 2012
Mr. Albert "Sonny" Mouw, age 80, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2012, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.
There will be a memorial service on Thursday, February 9, at 11:00 am, at the Dover Avenue Alliance Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jeffrey Keady will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City..
Albert John was born on September 15, 1931, at Orange City, the son of Marion John and Jeanette (Vellinga) Mouw. He was raised at Orange City, where he graduated from high school.
On September 28, 1951, he married Beverly Jean Starkenburg in Alton. They made their home in Orange City.
"Al" was employed at the Farmers Co-operative Elevator in Orange City for forty years, twenty of which were as manager of the Maurice branch. In retirement, he delivered flowers for The Flower Cart in Orange City for eight years.
He was an active member of the Dover Avenue Alliance Church, where he served as treasurer, deacon, elder, and Sunday school teacher. He also served on the board of directors of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City for eleven years.
Al enjoyed putting together picture puzzles, solving crossword puzzles, studying the Bible, and visiting with friends and neighbors at Hardees in Orange City. He was capable of fixing anything.
His family was his pride and joy, and he faithfully attended the ballgames in which his grandsons participated in both Orange City and Sioux Center.
Survivors include his wife of more than sixty years, "Bev"; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Robert Mars, of Sioux Center; and Cindy and Glenn Baker, of Orange City; four grandsons, Matt Mars, and his wife, Kiley, of West Des Moines; Tim Mars, and his wife, Dawn, of Johnston; and Nick Baker, and his wife, Mikkell, and Brady Baker, all of Orange City; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth De Koter, of Orange City; and Mary Beth, and her husband, Bill Hilton, of Sacramento, California; a brother and his wife, Kenneth and Nancy Mouw, of Yreka, California; and six nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother in infancy and a brother-in-law, Arthur De Koter.
