From the Alton Democrat, February 9, 1918:

John Slothouber of Alton died at Camp Cody, Deming, N.M., this week and the remains are en route to Iowa where he will be laid to rest. The young man was a soldier in Uncle Sam's forces and will probably be given a funeral with military honors at Sheldon with burial taking place at Alton.

From the Alton Democrat, February 16, 1918:

The body of private John Slothouber who died in camp at Deming, New Mexico, reached Sheldon Sunday and the funeral was held Tuesday, interment being made at the Sheldon cemetery. Pneumonia took the young man's life. He was a nephew of J. K. Bekman of Alton and there was some talk of interment being made at the Nassau township cemetery but it was evidently decided not to bring the remains here for burial.
