Dick Ver Steeg was born in Pella, Iowa on February 17, 1872, and came to Sioux County with his parents at the age of 13. In 1906 he was married to Johanna Roghair of Maurice. She died soon after giving birth to a son, John K. Ver Steeg, on March 18, 1907.

For about a year he lived alone, after which he stayed with his parents, who also took care of his son. Later they all stayed with Mrs. Dena Sterrenburg, a sister of Dick, for 28 years. The last 4 years of his life he made his home with his children, Mr. and Mrs. John K. Ver Steeg.

Mr. Ver Steeg operated a livery stable in Orange City for several years, and then he and Dr. H. J. Vande Waa went into the garage business. He was engaged in this work for over 30 years. Mr. Ver Steeg died December 12 after suffering a basal skull fracture when he fell backward as he approached the door of his home.

Surviving are his children, Mr. and Mrs. John K. Ver Steeg, two grandchildren, Joan Faye and Walter Dean, two sisters, Mrs. Dena Sterrenburg and Mrs. Kate De Cook, and a brother, Dingeman Ver Steeg.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at the home and at Trinity Reformed Church. Rev. R. Ongna officiated, with Rev. H. Colenbrander offering the closing prayer. Interment was in the local cemetery, with A. D. Van Etten in charge.

Funeral Services Saturday

Dick Ver Steeg suffered a fractured skull yesterday (Wednesday) when he fell backwards at the home of his son, Jack. He was taken to Doornink's Hospital, and last night he was still unconscious according to a member of the family.

Later: Mr. Ver Steeg died at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday evening from a fractured skull. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the home, and at 1:30 in the Trinity Church, with Rev. Ongna officiating.
