Elsie Mae was the daughter of Leonard and Ida (Raak) Popma. She was first raised on a Montana homestead and then moved to Iowa in 1920.
On September 27, 1935, she married Raymond De Jager at Ireton. They lived in Gardenia, California, where she worked as a housekeeper. In 1940, they returned to Ireton to farm. In 1946, they moved to a farm by Maurice. From 1966 to 1981, Elsie also worked at K-Products in LeMars and Orange City. In 1976, they moved into Maurice. On August 17, 1995, Mr. and Mrs. De Jager became residents of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, where she passed
away.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday school and catechism classes and participated in the womens’ activities of the church.
Survivors include her husband, Ray; a son and his wife, Ronald and Marlene De Jager of Maurice; a daughter and her husband, Neva Jean and Milo De Jong of Colfax, Washington; ten grandchildren, Leroy De Jager, Cindy Larsen, Gary De Jager, Brenda Bruxvoort, Nathan De Jager, Marci Jager, Tammy De Jong, Terri Sprague, Todd De Jong and Michelle Gibson; fifteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Russel Popma of Pipestone, Minnesota; a half-sister, Francis Kuhl of Hills, Minnesota; and two step-sisters, Viola Koopmans of Sioux Center; and Edna
Cooper of California. in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two half sisters, Mildred Ruth Popma and Alma Vander Broek.
