HELEN G. DE JAGER July 5, 1919-- December 2, 2005
Miss Helen De Jager, age 86, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, December 2, at the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City.
There will be a funeral service on Monday, December 5, at 1:30pm, in the chapel of the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Ter Beest will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Helen Geraldine was born on July 5, 1919, in rural Orange City, the daughter of Ring and Rena (Raak) De Jager. She was raised at Orange City, where she attended a country school and graduated from high school. She attended Northwestern Junior College in Orange City and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Westmar College in Le Mars.
She was a school teacher for 42 years. She taught in rural schools for three years, in Sutherland for three years, in Le Mars for ten years, and for 26 years, she taught first grade in the Orange City elementary school.
On June 5, 2001, Miss De Jager became a resident of Landsmeer Ridge.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. She also volunteered in the church library and helped pack mission boxes.
Helen was a charter member of the Alpha Phi Chapter, in Sioux and Lyon Counties, of Delta Kappa Gamma (teachers' organization). She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and reading.
Survivors include her two nieces, Noreen, and her husband, Ted De Hoogh, of Sioux Center; and Ellen De Jager, of Sioux City; two grand-nephews and their wives, Nathan and Shanna De Hoogh, of Sheldon; and Derek and Heidi De Hoogh, of Farmington, Minnesota; and four great-grand nephews and nieces, Bryant, Tyler, Kylee, and Mykah De Hoogh.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold De Jager, and his wife, Mina; and Gilbert Ray De Jager, in infancy.
