Wendell De Jong, 7, Run over by Car....Killed
Wendell De Jong, five year old son of Mr. And Mrs. Otto De Jong was fatally injured when he was hit by a car driven by Bernard Walhof of Orange City early Monday evening. He was rushed to the local doctor for first aid and taken to the Doornink hospital at Orange City by the Van Etten ambulance.
He passed away at the hospital on Tuesday morning. The little lad who lives in the first farm house on the mile road east of the overhead bridge climbed up the high east grade of Highway No. 75, darted under the cable fence, and onto the road just as the Walhof car approaching from the south sped up the hill. The impact causing the boy to be very badly mangled. Occupants of the Chevrolet including Mr. And Mrs. C.A. Walhof of Rock Valley and their son Bernard, banker at Orange City, who were returning from Sioux City, escaped injury. The headlight of the car was smashed and the radiator badly punctured.
