William E. "Bill" De Jong
June 23, 1912 - January 25, 1998
William E. "Bill" De Jong, 85, o f Storm Lake, formerly of Sheldon, died Sunday, January 25, at Methodist Manor following a sudden illness.
Memorial services were Wednesday, January 28, at Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon with the Rev. Gary Vande Kamp officiating. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon. |
DeJong was born June 23, 1912, in Alton, the son of William and Tillie (Menning) De Jong. He attended school in Alton. He married Ruth Oolbekkink on December 28, 1938, in Newkirk. She died in 1995. He was in the feed and produce business in Sheldon from 1938 to 1959. He then moved to Pipestone. Minnesota, where he was in the hatchery business until 1968. From
1968 to 1995, the couple lived in Fergus Falls, Minnesota where he worked as an insurance salesman until retiring in 1977. He moved to Sheldon in 1995 where he lived until moving to
Methodist Manor in 1997. He served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II. He was an active member and served on the state board of the Association for Retarded Citizens in Minnesota. He also was a member of the Federated Church and was active in the Senior Center in Fergus Falls.
Survivors include a son, David of Milroy, Minnesota; two daughters and their husbands, Audrey and David Peterson of Storm Lake and Susan and Cal Engel of Wichita, Kansas; four grandchildren, Kris and Jackie Peterson and J.J. and Adam Engel; and three brothers and their wives, Lloyd and Betty and Ken and Eleanor, all of Orange City, and Ray and Frances of Alton. He was preceded in death by a son, Cliff; three brothers, Howard, Pete and Ralph; and a sister, Anna Niewendorp.
