Cedric "Ced" Frank Van Steenwyk, 88, of Camano Island, Washington, died Friday, April 18, at his home.

No funeral service is planned but an informal gathering of friends and family to celebrate his life will be Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. at his home.

Van Steenwyk was born May 14, 1914 in Sioux Center. He raised his four children in Sioux Center where he owned Van's Jewelry for more than 35 years. He was active in the community and frequently spoke of his Dutch heritage. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was honored for developing a system enabling a compass to not be susceptible to magnetic parts of a navy aircraft. He and his wife Eleanor moved to Camano Island from Lake Okoboji, where he was an active fisherman.

He enjoyed time with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing pool, was an avid reader, loved to share his stories with others and was an attentive listener.

Survivors include four children, Ned Van Steenwyk of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Paul Van Steenwyk of Camano Island, Jan Mather of Camano Island and Ruth Geyer of Bellingham, Washington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Hospice of Snohomish County or the local hospice organization.
