First Article: Darrell R. Van Steenwyk, 16, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Van Steenwyk of Alton, was fatally injured Sunday afternoon in a two car collision on a county road 1 3/4 miles north of Alton.

He died enroute to the Orange City hospital of neck and head injuries.

The driver of the other car, J. T. (Matty) Evans, 69, Alton automobile dealer, incurred a wrist fracture and other injuries and was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City Sunday night after emergency treatment at the Orange City hospital.

Both cars were reported by Iowa Highway Patrolman Arthur Jonker to be a near total loss. The two men were riding alone. The accident occured at the crest of a hill on a gravel road. The Van Steenwyk automobile ended up in the ditch. Patrolman Jonker said Mr. Evans was wearing a safety belt. The body of young Van Steenwyk was taken to the Van Etten Funeral Home at Orange City.

Obituary: Funeral services for Darrell Van Steenwyk, 16, of Alton, Iowa, who died in a two car collision a mile east of Orange City Sunday afternoon were held at 1:30 P.M., Wednesday at the First Christian Reformed Church of Orange City. Burial was in the Orange City cemetery under the direction of the Van Etten Funeral Home.

Darrell Van Steenwyk was born August 1, 1948. He was a junior student at Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa.

Survivors include the parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Van Steenwyk, who live two and one-half miles east of Orange City; two sisters, Debra and Cheryl, and one brother, Scott, all at home; grandparents Mr. & Mrs. William Van Steenwyk and Mr. & Mrs. Jake Huizenga all of Orange City.

Western Christian High School dismissed classes Wednesday so that friends of the deceased could attend the services.
