TENHAKEN, DEJONGH, VANSURKSUM

Verla Ten Haken, age 58, of Rock Valley, IA, died Friday, May 17, 1996, at Saint Mary's Hospital at Rochester, MN. Funeral service was Tuesday, May 21, at the Faith Reformed Church at Rock Valley. Rev. Harlan DeJong and Rev. Roger Voskuil will be officiating. Burial followed at the Valley View Cemetery. Visitation began at noon Monday with the family present 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday at the Porter Funeral Home at Rock Valley.

Verla was born August 9, 1937 at Hull, IA. She was the daughter of Henry and Nellie (Van Surksum) De Jongh. Verla graduated from the Hull High School in 1955. She married Harold Ten Haken on June 7, 1955 at Anchorage, Alaska. Together they lived in Alaska until moving to Hull, IA in August of 1956. In December of 1958 they moved to Rock Valley where Verla worked as a book keeper for Pember's Drug Store for many years.

Verla was a charter member of the Faith Reformed Church at Rock Valley, taught Sunday School and Friendship Bible Class, was a Classical officer of the Reformed Church Women Ministry, and very active in Rock Valley's golf and bowling leagues.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Harold of Rock Valley; one son and his wife, Wade and Laurie Ten Haken of Chandler, Arizona; two daughters and their husbands, Cindy and Jerry Chettinger of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Sandra and James Miller of Rochester, MN; one brother and his wife, Vern and Hester DeJongh of Hull, IA; brother-in-law, Leonard Risseeuw of Larchwood, IA; four sisters and their husbands, Marion and John B. Groeneweg of Rock Valley, Henrietta and Art Boeve of Steen, MN, Bev and Dave Wesselink of Marathon, IA, Diane and Harlyn Kempema of Rock Valley; mother-in-law, Ada Ten Haken of Hull, IA; nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, David; parents, Henry and Nellie DeJongh; sister, Mrs. Leonard (Norma) Risseeuw.

Memorials may be directed to Rock Valley's Hope Haven School.
