Harold Ten Haken, age 68, died Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley. Funeral service was held on Saturday at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. The Rev. Mike Van Hamersveld was the officiant.

Harold Ten Haken was born April 5, 1934 in Sioux County, Iowa, son of Willis and Ada (Brouwer) Ten Haken. While growing up in the Hull, Iowa area Harold worked for his uncles doing various farm work. He graduated from Hull High School and began helping his father on the farm. Harold enlisted in the US Army on August 12, 1954 and was stationed at Fort Richardson, Anchorage, AK after basic training. Harold married Verla De Jongh on June 7, 1955 in Anchorage.

Harold and Verla moved to Hull, Iowa in August 1956 after he was discharged from the Army. In 1958, they moved to Rock Valley where they owned and operated the Wayne Feeds Elevator. In March of 1989, after 31 years in business, Harold sold the elevator and went back to school to earn his real estate license. Verla died May 17, 1996. Harold married Mabel Ver Mulm in August of 1997.

Harold enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their sporting events, golfing and telling stories to friends. He also enjoyed watching the Twins, Vikings and Hawkeyes. Harold was an active member of the Reformed Church and served on the consistory for many years. He was currently a member of the Sioux County Health Board.

Surviving relatives include his wife Mabel of Rock Valley; one son and his wife, Wade and Laurie Ten Haken of Chandler, AZ; 2 daughters and their husbands: Cindy and Jerry Chettinger of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; Sandra and James Miller of Rochester, MN; 2 step-sons and their wives, Rev. Calvin and Jane Ver Mulm of Rock Valley, David and Jo Ver Mulm of Murfreesboro, TN; 3 step-daughters and their husbands: Jerilyn and Robert Scott of Frostburg, MD, Gayle and Dwayne Van Leeuwen of Hull, Iowa, Lisa and Paul Stensland of Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters: Lois Visser of Albuquerque, NM, Linda and her husband Bernie Mulder of Carmel, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 16 step-grandchildren.

Note: The Ten Haken family headstone in the Valley View Cemetery lists the four children of Harold and Verla, giving the son’s name, who shares the tombstone with his parents, as “Daniel, 1957-1995."
