Sioux Center News, February 12, 1942

Wilhelmina, daughter of Adrian M. & Elizabeth Joana Vanden Berg was born in the vicinity of Pella, Marion County, Iowa on the 22nd day of March 1859, and departed this life at her home in Sioux Center, Iowa on the 7th day of February 1942, at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 16 days.

About the year 1870 her family consisting of father, mother and seven children migrated to Sioux County and settled on a farm near Alton, Iowa.

She was united in marriage with Wouter Van Steenbergen on the 11th day of December 1876 at Orange City, Iowa. In the spring of 1885 the family moved to Harrison, Douglas Co., So. Dakota, where they resided until the fall of 1890 and them moved to Sioux Center, Iowa, where they established a permanent residence.

There were six children born into the family namely, Jacob, Elizabeth (Mrs. August Hillmer), Adrian M; Gerrit, John and William. She was preceded in death by her husband and three sons namely, Jacob, Adrian M. and Gerrit. Surviving her are three children: Mrs. August Hillmer of Sioux Center, John of Prairie City and William of Grand Rapids, Mich.; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; also two brothers, Arie Vanden Berg of Harrison, SD, and James Vanden Berg of Corsica, SD, and one sister, Mrs. Jacob Dykstra of Parker, SD to mourn her departure.

While her devotion to family remained paramount and unsullied, it did not deter her in her devotion to church, community, friends and neighbors. To those who knew her best this devotion will remain as a lasting memorial to her and to a life well lived.
