IRVIN FINCH PASSES AWAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Was a Veteran of the Civil War and Lived in This Community for Thirty Years

In the death of Irvin Finch, which occurred at his home in this city Tuesday afternoon, Hawarden loses one of her Civil war veterans and respected citizens. Mr. Finch had been in feeble health for a number of years and for several weeks his life had seemingly hung in the balance, so that his death was not unexpected at this time. Funeral services were h eld at the Presbyterian church at 2 o’clock this afternoon, Rev. A.M. McIntosh officiating. Old comrades of the Civil war acted as honorary pall bearers and young soldiers of the late war were active pall bearers. The ritualistic service of the Grand Army of the Republic of which he was an honored member, was carried out at the grave. In his passing the country loses another of the loyal men who stood by her in time of need, the community loses a good citizen, and the wife and children mourn the loss of a kind husband and loving father.

Irvin Finch was born in New York in the year 1842, and moved with his parents to Jones county Iowa when three years of age. When he was 8 years of age his father died leaving his mother and five small children to endure the hardships of frontier life. At the age of nineteen he offered his ;service to his country, but was twice rejected. In 1861 he was finally accepted and served in the 9th Iowa volunteers until the close of the war. In 1865 he was united in marriage with Miss Emma E. Walling on Montour, Iowa, where they lived until 1889, when they moved to Union County, S.D., locating six miles northwest of Hawarden. They resided on the farm until 1900 when they moved to Hawarden. Hi wife passed away the following year. To this union were born thirteen children, seven of whom are still living. These are Lewis M. of Hartford, S.D., George of Washington, Will A, of Hawarden, Orson R. of Hawarden, Mrs. Effie M. Montgomery of Tacoma, R. Elmer of Willow Lake, S.D., E. Rodell of Hawarden. Of the deceased children, Foster I lived to the age of 37, the others dying in infancy. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. J. C. McKernan of Dakota City, Neb, and Mrs. Amos Rouse of Montour, Iowa. There are also twenty-nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Three grandsons served in the present war.

His second marriage was with Mrs. Ida Hubbard in 1901. She survives him and ministered tenderly to his every need in his declining years. A wide circle of friends extend sincere sympathy to the sorrowing family.
