PIONEER GONE
Ephraim French an honorable veteran of the Civil War and a prominent pioneer of northwest Iowa passed to his eternal reward from his home in Sioux City on Monday December twentyeighth 1908 at the age of sixty-four years and seven months and eleven days. The deceased was the son of john and Elizabeth French and was born in England on May 17, 1844 and is survived in his fathers family by two brothers—James or Ireton Iowa and Charles of Pipestone, Minnesota. Also two sisters—Mrs. Susan Coon of Ireton and Mrs. Emma Rugg of Waterloo. When a boy of seven Ephraim immigrated with his parents to America and settled in New York State. On August 27 1862 he enlisted in Company G 146th NY Volunteer Infantry and gave himself to the service of his country. ….. [long section on his Civil war service]

On February 8, 1887 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Evaline Struble of Ireton. ..family of four children 2 sons and 2 daughters…two died in childhood…those who remain are Herbert and Ruth. These with the wife and step-son mourn the loss…

Three years ago Mr. French moved with his family to Sioux City to give the children better opportunities for advanced learning. About 6 months ago, his health began to fail and though the best medical authorities were consulted and everything done to prolong his life the disease was deep rooted and incurable. An internal cancer resulted in his death….The interment service was held in the Ireton Methodist church on Thursday December 31 and was largely attended. Veterans of the Grand Army—of which deceased was a member—acted as pall bears and the Woman’s Relief Corp. marched in a body. By the side of his two children in the Ireton cemetery his remains were laid to rest to await the dawn of the Resurrection.
