Rock Valley, IA - Pete Vande Velde, 82, died Monday, February 20, 2006 at his daughter's home in Rock Valley. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m., Friday at Pioneer United Methodist Church, Rock Valley.
Pete Vande Velde was born November 11,1923 to Pete Sr and Josie (Wissink) Vander Velde in
Rock Valley. After graduating from Rock Valley High School, Pete entered the United States
Navy in December, 1942 and served his country during World War II. He was honorably
discharged in January, 1946. Pete was united in marriage to La Vonne Boscaljon on January 1,
1947 in Inwood, IA. He worked at Rock Valley Cement/Block and Tile for 35 years until
retirement. Pete then helped La Vonne with the Stable Cafe. Pete lived the Harness Racing life
for 43 years. He raised, trained and raced horses, "Rolling Thunder" being his first. Pete was inducted into the Iowa Living Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2003.
Pete is survived by his wife of 59 years, La Vonne; daughter, Lori (Robert) Boogerd of Rock
Valley; sons: Mark Vande Velde of Denmark, WI, Craig Vande Velde of Orlando, FL and Jeff
(Pat) Vande Velde of Tishomingo, MS; daughter-in-law, Dianne Vande Velde of Spearfish, SD;
12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters: Margaret Van Otterloo and Janet Kruizenga both of Rock Valley; sisters-in-law: Gertrude Vande Velde of Rock Valley, Wanda (Milo) Olson and Marlis (Stan) Garman all of Larchwood, IA, Gloria (Russ) Stewig of Redwood Falls, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy Vande Velde; brother, Marty Vander Velde;
sister, Anna Mae Gerritsen.
