June 28, 1904-November 30, 1994

Johanna M. Vis, 90, of Hull died Wednesday, November 30, at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 3, at First Reformed Church of Hull with burial in Hope Cemetery.

The former Johanna Vanden Berg was born June 28, 1904, in Renkum, The Netherlands, the daughter of Anthony and Maria (Jansen) Vanden Berg. She came to the United States with her family at the age of 12, settling in Michigan. After a short time they moved to the Middleburg/Sioux Center area. She married Peter P. Vis at Sioux Center on February 23, 1923. The couple farmed south of Hull until 1928, when they moved into Hull. For many years she was the bookkeeper at the Hull Pharmacy. He died August 8, 1970, at Rock Valley. She became a resident of Pleasant Acres in September 1994.

She was a member of First Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Reformed Church Women's Ministries. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Hull.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Peter and Martha of Boyden, Clayton and Mae of Hull and Harvey and Coralynn of Marshalltown; two daughters and their husbands, Marie and Gilbert De Ruiter of Rock Valley and Arnetta and Alan Ten Haken of Hull; a daughter-in-law, Edith Vis of Rock Valley; a sister, Anthonetta Van Surksum of Chino, California; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three sons, Anthony, Gerald and Christian; a brother, Chris Vanden Berg; and a sister, Alice Den Hartog.
