Poppen, Jake, died 1934 age 42

Dr. Jake Poppen, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Poppen, died of streptococcus infection in the Kalamazoo, Mich. hospital last week Monday. He was living in Otsego, Mich. where he was a physician. He was attended during his illness by his cousin Dr. Clarence Poppen. He was forty-two years old.

Dr. Poppen was born in Kansas and came to Sioux Center with his parents when he was two years old. He grew up in Sioux Center, attended school here until he enrolled in the Academy at Orange City. After graduating from there he attended Hope College and later Northwestern University of Evanston where he got his degree as a doctor of medicine. After finishing Northwestern he opened a practice in Detroit, Mich., moving from there to Otsego two years ago.

He is survived by his parents, his widow and two boys, the oldest ten years and the youngest seven; and four brothers and two sisters. They are Dr. A. R. Poppen of Muskegon, Mich.; Rev. Henry Poppen, missionary to China; John Poppen of Sioux Center; Cyrus M. Poppen of Muskegon; and Mrs. Ring A. Vander Schaaf and Mrs. Albert Van Putten of Sioux Center.

Funeral services were held Thursday at the Congregational Church in Otsego. Interment was in a cemetery near Holland. Mrs. Vander Schaaf and Mrs. Van Putten attended the funeral services.
