Rev. E. E. Vernon Dies At Iroquois; Rites Held Today

Rev. Ernest E. Vernon of Iroquois, S.D., 77, retired Methodist minister, died Monday after an illness of several months.

He was well known by many in Hawarden. He frequently visited in the home of his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Vernon, in the home of his brother, Fred Vernon.

He was born June 18, 1877, at Vermillion, S.D., and when a small boy he moved to Parker, S.D., where he was graduated from high school. He also attended Dakota Wesleyan university and Garrett Biblical Institute at Northwestern university, Evanston, Ill.

He entered the ministry about 1904 in the Dakota conference and continued in this work until 1942 when he retired. During his work as a minister he held pastorates at Gettysburg, Dell Rapids, Deadwood, Salem, Doland and Iroquois, all in South Dakota. He was serving at Iroquois when he retired and he had continued to live there ever since.

He was married to Carrie Hoeflinger of Centerville, S.D., and they celebrated their golden wedding several years ago. He was a past grand master of the South Dakota Odd Fellows lodge and became a 50-year Mason this year.

Survivors include the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Grace Josephs of Iroquois; two granddaughters and five brothers, Bert T. and Clyde of Minneapolis, Robert R. of St. Louis, Maurice J. of Long Beach, Calif., and Fred F. of Hawarden.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Methodist church at Iroquois. The district superintendent of his district will officiate. Burial will be at Iroquois.
