Dies Thursday at Local Hospital
Funeral services were held at the First Reformed church here at 1:30 p.m. Monday for Mrs. Jake E. Vermeer, nee Henrietta Nyman, a resident of Sioux Center and vicinity all of her adult life, who passed away at the Sioux Center Community hospital Thursday evening, March 8, 1962, at the age of 79.
Services were conducted by the Rev. Harry Brower and burial was made in the Sioux Center Community cemetery with Vander Ploeg’s Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
A brief service was held in the church basement preceding the main rites.
Mrs. Vermeer was born in Gelderland December 15, 1882, and immigrated to the U. S. as a girl. She was married to Jake E. Vermeer on July 12, 1906 at a farm north of Sioux Center, now occupied by the Arie Colenbrander family. The ceremony was performed by the late Rev. James DePree, a long-time pastor of First Reformed church.
Following their marriage the couple settled on a farm a mile south of Sioux Center where Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Verrneer now live. They made their home on this place until retiring and moving into Sioux Center in 1943.
Survivors besides her husband, include two daughters, Harriet (Mrs. John R. Vander Schaaf) of Middleburg and Johanna (Mrs. Harvey Vermeer) of Sioux Center; four sons, Edwin, Wilbert, Arnold and Marvin, all of Sioux Center vicinity; 28 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Gerrit Gesink of Denver and Mrs. Sam Schutt, Sr., of Clinton, Wisc.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bert, who died April 17, 1953, three brothers, five sisters and three grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Vermeer had observed their 55th wedding anniversary with open house at the First Reformed church here on July 12 of last year. All of their living children and grandchildren were in attendance.
