April 1, 1921-Sept. 1, 2004

ROCK VALLEY--Maurice Van Voorst, 83, Rock Valley, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Valley Manor in Rock Valley.

Services will be 2 p.m. today (Saturday, Sept. 4) at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Mike Van Hamersveld officiating. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley, under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Maurice Van Voorst was born April 1, 1921, at Sioux Center. Maurice worked for Van Voorst Transfer Trucking Company before and after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Lucy Bleeker on Sept. 24, 1943, at Passaic, N.J. After attending diesel mechanic school in Chicago, he worked for Hiway Chevy before starting his own auto repair business. Maurice was a maintenance person for Hope Haven and later was manager of Community Oil, when they built their new facilities.

He retired to design and build homes and enjoy his hobby of woodworking. He served on the Rock Valley City Council for many years and was mayor of Rock Valley 1985-1991. Mrs. Van Voorst died July 26, 2002.

Survivors include a son, Maurice Van Voorst Jr. of St. Petersburg, FL; a daughter, Carol and Lyle Rozeboom of Rochester, MN; a sister, Jeanette and Bill Van Den Top of Rock Valley; and six grandchildren.
