James Van Voorst
Aug. 13, 1925-Feb. 13, 2003

James Van Voorst, 77, Sioux Center, died Thursday morning, Feb. 13, at Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Services were Monday, Feb. 17, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with Pastor Jan Neels officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

James Van Voorst, son of Jacob and Jeanette (Vande Hoef) Van Voorst, was born Aug. 13, 1925, near Sioux Center. He was raised on the family farm and attended country school. He married Greta Vander Weide on Jan. 11, 1946, in Sioux Center. They farmed near Sioux Center and Hull. They moved to their home in Sioux Center in 1972 after he became disabled. Mrs. Van Voorst died Oct. 22, 2002. He most recently made his home at Crown Pointe in Sioux Center.

He was a member of Heritage Reformed Church in Hull. For many years he volunteered to record audio tapes for use by members of Netherlands Reformed Church in Sioux Center and Heritage Reformed Church in Hull.

Survivors include three daughters, Lois and Alvin Zomer of Sioux Center, Shirley and Adrie "Dutch" Born of Sioux Center, and Lavonne and Harvey Spaans of Hull; five sons, Roger and Carol Van Voorst of Sioux Center, Arlin Van Voorst and special friend, Vicky Coy, of Adrian, MO, Doug and Diane Van Voorst of Marionville, MO, Tom and Annette Van Voorst of Maurice, and Kevin and Angie Van Voorst of Newport, MN; two daughters-in-law, Audrey and Perry Raman of Hull, and Shirley Van Voorst of Rock Valley; 34 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a brother, Maurice Van Voorst of Rock Valley; a sister, Jeanette and Bill Vanden Top of Rock Valley; a brother-in-law, George Vonk of Sioux Center; and four sisters-in-law, Alice Van Voorst of Sioux Center, Jennie Van Voorst of Rock Valley, Jeanette Van Voorst of Orange City, and Esther Tromp of Pella.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Greta Van Voorst; two sons, Alvin Van Voorst and Timothy Van Voorst; an infant son, James Van Voorst Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Van Voorst; a grandson-in-law, Clifford Vanden Berg; six brothers, Jacob Van Voorst, Sam Van Voorst, John Van Voorst, Harry Van Voorst, Henry Van Voorst and William Van Voorst; and three sisters, Gertrude Hoogendoorn, Henrietta Vonk and Marie Vander Stouwe.

According to articles in the Sioux Center News in 1970-1971, he suffered from a chronic heart condition, had been hospitalized at least three times in 1970, and sold the farm and moved to Sioux Center in 1971.
