DUANE VAN DER WEIDE
April 5, 1940----- December 21, 2006
Mr. Duane Van Der Weide, age 66, of Maurice, passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2006, at his residence.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, December 23, at 2:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. The Rev. Wayne Sneller will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sherman Township Cemetery, near Maurice. Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Duane Eugene was born on April 5, 1940, in Orange City, the son of John and Daisy (Zeutenhorst) Van Der Weide. He was a lifetime resident of Maurice, where he attended the public school. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, where he was known as "Dutch". He was the pitcher for the Buena Vista Beavers, winning letters all four years.
On September 18, 1962, Duane married Dorothy Vander Stelt in Maurice. They made their home in Maurice, where he first worked for Ruisch Painting. He then operated Duane's Grocery in Maurice for twelve years and for 28 years he was employed by Wells Blue Bunny in Le Mars. In retirement, he worked part-time for Regional Transportation.
He was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Maurice, where he and his wife were custodians for 22 years.
Mr. Van Der Weide took great pride in being the mayor of Maurice, currently serving his 23rd year in that office. He had also been a city councilman and the city clerk. He belonged to the Maurice Fire Department for 44 years, more than 25 years as president, and he had been a member of the board of directors of the Maurice-OrangeCity Community Schools for nine years.
He was also involved in the Maurice Booster Club, the Maurice Improvement Association, the Sioux County Community Foundation, and several committees for the Maurice Centennial.
All year long, he looked forward to the Christmas season and being able to decorate their yard. He was always willing to help anyone with their lights, because he enjoyed seeing the whole town work together in transforming Maurice into a Small Town Christmas.
Duane liked taking trips to Branson, Missouri, and spending time with his grandkids. He also collected Ertl trucks. He always had a friendly "Howdy Do" for anyone he met.
Survivors include his wife of more than 44 years; three children, Jeff Van Der Weide, and his wife, Cindy (De Boer), of Maurice; Betty Jo De Weerd, of Reston, Virginia, and her husband, Roger, of Maurice; and Jerry Van Der Weide, and his wife, Kathy (Woods), of Maurice; six grandchildren, Jessica, Cassandra, Samantha, and Dustin Van Der Weide; and Breanne and Branson De Weerd; three brothers and their wives, Rod and Betty Lou Van Der Weide, Lee and Marietta Van Der Weide, and Bob and Beth Zeutenhorst, all of Maurice; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
