From the Alton Democrat of Jan 21, 1899
Mr. Paulson, an old Lincoln county settler, was walking home on the railroad track Friday afternoon, when he was run down and instantly killed by the north bound freight. The engineer saw a man walking on the track and blew the whistle and rang the bell to warn him off, but the latter, (who was quite deaf) did not seem to hear the warning signals, so the engineer whistled for the brakes which were immediately applied, ut the momentum of the train was too great and the old gentleman was run down. The engine did not run over him, the cowcatcher pushing him along. Both legs and all the ribs on one side were broken, and the old gentleman was breathing his last when they tenderly picked him up. The remains were brought back here and the Sioux county coroner was telegraphed for as the accident happened about two and a-half miles north of here in Sioux county. On Sunday a coroner's jury of three of our citizens, namely, J. B. Bradley. Ole Iverson and A. E. Cable were sworn in and viewed the remains, but up to the present writing a verdict has not yet been rendered. The funeral was held on Monday forenoon, the services being held at the Scandinavian Lutheran church from where the remains were followed to their last resting place in the Norway township cemetery, six miles west of here, by a large number of the friends of the deceased. The deceased leaves a wife and several grown up sons and daughters to mourn his sudden taking off. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to these bereaved ones in this their time of grief.
( After much research, this was A. or Andrew Paulson as related by an small article in the Hawarden Independent of Jan 19, 1899. The article stated he was 67 year of age so that would be a born year od about 1832. Found further reference to the father of William Paulson (1866 Norway) in the 1925 census, his father was A. Paulson born Norway and mother was Anna Ramberg, born Norway. Also found that Julie Paulson Mrs. Peter Miller born about 1868 was a daughter of Andrew and Anna in the 1925 census of Settlers Tsp, Sioux County IA. They were two of their children living in Sioux County at the time. Andrew and Anna were living in South Dakota with no available census records from 1880-1900. )
